Remember what it was like to be a kid? Sitting in class, having fantastic adventures in your imagination far away, while your teachers were trying to teach you how to add fractions?

My friend recently shared a story that her 4-year old neice, Ariana, wrote (okay — so she dictated the story and her mom typed it up) and I felt I needed to pass it on. When I read it, I could really picture the kid sitting there, telling the story, and almost see the little creative steps and jumps in her mind — because unlike stories written by adults, there’s no forethought. Just stream-of-consciousness imagination.  I love it.

Story by Ariana

Spirit went to a high place with his parents. Then they found a good home to live in. Then they liked the home. Then Spirit used to like the home. And then Spirit was happy at his home. And then the parents used to like it too. The horses used to like the home. So and then the horses really liked their home. And then they loved their home. And Spirit played in their home. And spirit played in their home. And Spirit saw butterflies in the backyard. So the horses loved their home. As soon as they sleep in their home. And all of the horses woke up, and then Spirit went to the backyard & saw a lot of butterflies at his backyard. And Spirit loved the butterflies.

So the horses really really loved their home. And then Spirit was dancing and wiggling his tail. And the horsey loved to wiggle his tail. And so the horsey loved to wiggle his tail. And so the horses lived in their home as they loved it.

Spirit found a new friend to play with. And then they saw a unicorn. A sparkly unicorn! And then they played with the unicorn too. Then the unicorn put down its’ horn & the horses ran away as fast as they could. And then Spirit ran to his parents too. And then Spirit’s friend like the home too. And then his friend lived with him too. And then they lived happily as they wanted to. And then his friend checked the backyard of his home. And then his friend saw butterflies in the back yard too. So spirit & his friend went to the back yard both of them & saw lots & lots of butterflies. And then the mom checked out the backyard and then the mom saw the butterflies too. And then Spirit’s friend checked out the bedrooms & his friend liked the bedrooms too. So Spirit’s friend wanted to sleep in one of those beds too.

And then when the horses got in to that home that was a bumble bee home. And so the bees came to their home and the bees saw there were horses in their home. And then the bumble bees destroyed the horses and then the horses destroyed the bees too. So then the bees flew away-so just one bee came back to its’ home so then the butterflies came back and the butterflies warned the horses. And then the horses carried the butterflies on their backs. So the unicorn came & the unicorn did not poke the horses with their horn. Then the unicorn said sorry. The unicorn wanted the horsey to live in the unicorn’s home. And then the unicorn showed the horses how beautiful the unicorn’s house looked. And sparkly so the horses lived in the unicorn’s home. Then the unicorn was happy. And then they had nail polish. And then a girl came to the horse’s home. And the girl put nail polish on the horse’s paws.

  1. There’s something really touching about that story (maybe even a valuable life lesson that could be learned from it). Thanks for sharing! Oh, and nice photos. :) Cheers!

  2. Great story….and ofcourse the pics are great too… has to be…it is Labrador!!!

  3. I am amazed about the imaginations of young children. I would make up stories in which I would personify animals and plants to my children. Before I would know it they would come back at me with even a wilder one. We had great fun.
